| Update July 2010 These past weeks I've been contemplating the word 'away.' Such a fleeting little word to carry us over the rainbow, to dispose of thoughts and stuff or excusing not answering calls. I wanted to find this mystical realm of 'away' and find out what actually happens there.... Cleaning out my cupboards I found hidden treasure in the form of old clothes and unwanted gifts I had stashed 'away.' Of course it was not away at all, just hidden out of sight, out of mind. Now I had found my illusive stuff in all the nooks and crannies of my home I had revealed the myth I had told myself, that putting it away was a good thing to do. Facing my pile of unused stuff I knew that it was time to throw away my excess baggage. So, my next mythical realm was met... where do we throw stuff away to? Is there such a place as 'away?' When we give stuff to someone else do they inevitably stash in the same way I had just done, if I give to a primary school for craft activities they will make use of them until one day parents throw all craft and art away too. Do I throw to the bin where the big noisy truck takes it away- never to be seen again. The later I know is a non returnable ticket where most of the community's belongings end up. The heart crushing truth is that there is not a place where piles of once loved stuff lives happily ever after, it's landfill. The land over the rainbow called 'away' does not exist. We are living on the one planet we all call home and each time we throw away our stuff we are polluting our home. We all know the slogan- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. The importance of these actions are in the order that they are spoken. Reducing waste is the most important action we can take. We've adapted a disposable lifestyle where the earth is paying the price. What can you do to reduce household, school and business waste? Ranting about overflowing landfill, diminishing resources, polluted oceans and villages in China that are piled high with e-waste is not the solution for the greater community. You need to be the one taking action by being the change you want to see in the world. Become the inspiration, empowered by positive action and through your lifestyle you will teach others what they can do too. You are what you do, not what you say you do! When asked a question it's not uncommon to find me jumping out of a trance with an "oops, sorry I was away with the faeries." This place I often go to where I contemplate such things as 'away' is my eco faerie self wondering what my place is on this beautiful planet called home. As an Eco Faerie it is my place to take positive action, to not fight with anger at the wrong doings I see in the world- rather make changes within my realm that resonate to a greener, brighter future. Switching on the little green lights within others of the community is done by them seeing the positive results and making the change themselves. Our place is to remain focused on community, on living sustainably and expressing creatively. Happy July dear Eco Faeries! Eco Faeries is launching our interactive multimedia platform on the 21st August in Perth at an adult's only Eco Faeries Unleashed celebration. This will be a music focused event with bands and DJ's stimulated by burlesque and bellydance performance artists. There will be live body paint art and Eco Faerie digital media screened. Our television program is ready for take-off, so come celebrate with us as we unite our community. We will be running a one day Eco Faerie workshop in Melbourne during the first week of September- watch this space for details. With much love and dancing green light Faerie Cara |
