Recycle
Why should we bother to re-use & recycle some things?
The most important reasons for not throwing things away are:
Making things from recycled material can use less energy and cause less pollution
Less space is needed to get rid of waste.
Less new material is needed to make things.
Many people do not like wasting things and would like them to be recycled
Making aluminium cans from old ones uses only one twentieth of the energy that is needed to make them from raw materials.

The Recycle Mark is a call for action. Please try and recycle whenever possible.
The new packaging symbols

New packaging symbols are now starting to appear on some packaging. They help to identify how different parts of packaging can be recycled.
"Widely Recycled" means 65% of people have access to recycling facilities for these items.
"Check locally" means 15% - 65% of people have access to recycling facilities for these items.
"Not recycled" means less than 15% of people have access to recycling facilities for these items.

 The Green Dot
The Green Dot does NOT necessarily mean that the packaging can be recycled. It is a symbol used on packaging in many European countries and signifies that the producer has made a contribution towards the recycling of packaging.

 Plastics
Identifies the type of plastic: PET and HDPE bottles are recycled by the majority of local authorities.

Overflowing dustbins and extra bags of rubbish
The Royal Mail delivers around 150 million cards and packets each day during the pre-Christmas period.
7.5 million Christmas trees were bought in 2001
It is estimated that over Christmas as much as 83 square km of wrapping paper will end up in UK rubbish bins
We could use an extra 750 million bottles and glass containers, and 500 million drinks cans.

STOP LITTERING

LITTER LAWS – RESPONSIBILITIES AND RIGHTS

Disposing of litter inappropriately is unacceptable.   Not only is it anti-social and unpleasant, littering is also ILLEGAL, and those who throw down, drop, or deposit and leave litter in any place, even if it is just a cigarette end or chewing gum, can be fined or face a court prosecution.

Do you do it?????????

Or are you sad to see others littering???????

Are you fed up of seeing this
and this?
and thisOr this

If so what can we do about it??????

OK, well we can start by not throwing litter down because we can't be bothered to put it in the bin or our pockets and take it home.

**************************
We could start putting litter in bins and ask our friends to do the same.
And if we join a litter picking group or even start one (with adult's supervision).
If you belong to the girl guides or scouts maybe you could litter pick the park near you?

Most litter can be recycled, (see our ideas for recycling coming soon )
